Events / Rules

The Tournament Director reserves the right to modify the divisions/entries to best serve the participants. 

This event is broken out into three sections:

  • Tachiwaza
  • Newaza
  • Waza Skills

Students are split into groups of 3 - 4 from the same class (listed below) and will compete in three different sections to determine the top athlete. Then students who win a majority of the sections will be declared the overall winner. 

Awards for the first, second, and third-place athletes will be given for each event as well. 

In the event of a tie, the overall winner will be determined by a head-to-head match-up and/or points earned during matches. Matches won by ippon will be 10 points, wazari will be 5 points and decision will be 2 points.

TACHIWAZA & NEWAZA DIVISION:

This is where students will only face off against teammates from their dojo. They will not compete against other dojos in a randori-style judo match unless otherwise specified to fill a group. Judoka will be grouped by Class/Skill & Weight within 10 pounds in a max group of 4.

Tachiwaza Event starts with judoka standing facing each other.

Newaza Event starts with judoka sitting back to back. 

Judoka will go back to these stances during matte.

WAZA DIVISION:

Waza Divisions will be grouped by class/skill levels and participants can pick their own partners. Each group will demonstrate a specific number of techniques while tori & uke will be evaluated as a team. Both students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills/techniques.

Groups will be evaluated under the following criteria:

  • Tori's ability to perform Kuzushi, Tsukuri & Kake for their technique, and Uke's ability to perform a proper break fall.
  • Tori & Uke's ability to work together and in unison when it comes to movement, bowing, and gripping.
