EVENTS WILL USE A MODIFIED IJF RULE SET

Below is a list of rules that are being modified from the IJF Rule Set. 

These events are designed to give the best possible experience for the athlete. Coaches and referees should work together to create a positive experience for athletes. 

Three mat areas will be used. IJF Contest Area rules apply. At least 6X6M contest area; 3M safety area with 4m between adjoining mats.

The CARE System will not be used.

Please note that OPEN Divisions are in reference to TIME IN JUDO and not weight or Rank. Open Divisions mean 7+ months in Judo are able to participate in the stated division - it does NOT refer to Rank, Age, or Weight. NOVICE for Junior divisions (4 - 20-year-old divisions) are those with 6 months or less of judo experience.

NOVICE Divisions for Senior & Veteran Divisions are WHITE THROUGH BLUE Belts.

Rule Breakdown and/or Modifications

  • Modified double elimination.
  • Round robin for four (4) or fewer competitors.
  • Wins count first and points count second in round robin divisions.
  • Points will be awarded to the winner of the match: Ippon = 10 Points, Wazari = 5 Points, Decision = 3 points & Hansoku-make = 10 points.
  • International Judo Federation rules with the following modifications: 
  • Kansetsu-waza permitted - 17 years old and above in OPEN Divisions.
  • Shime-waza permitted - 13 years old and above in OPEN Divisions
  • No Kansetsu Waza or Shime Waza Allowed in Novice Divisions 
  • Drop Double Knee Techniques are ALLOWED in all divisions.
  • Rest periods - Rest periods will not exceed the length of a match.
  • Co-ed competition for children 10 years old and younger may occur depending on the number of entries in those divisions.
  • Novice Divisions for JUNIORS are considered 6 or fewer months of Judo experience. Open Divisions are 7 or more months of experience. 
  • Novice Divisions for SENIOR / VETERAN divisions are white through blue belt. Advanced divisions are Brown & Black Belts
  • Novice Divisions for JUNIORS under 10 years old are NEWAZA ONLY! Novice divisions for athletes over 10 years old will be "regular"
  • WHITE JUDO GIS ONLY!
  • Blue & White Sashes will be available for athlete use
  • Match times will be 4 minutes for Senior Advanced Divisions 
  • Match times will be 3 minutes for Senior Novice & Veterans
  • Match times will be 3 minutes for Juniors 9 - 17 years old.
  • Match times will be 2 minutes for Juniors 4-8 years old.
  • Golden score will be used in all divisions. Unlimited time for Open division of 15-16, 17-20 & Senior/Veteran Advanced Divisions. 2 minutes for all others.
  • All athletes must be in Judo Gi to receive awards.
